Learning to Fly Art Gallery

From the Author:

"These eight drawings are among the fifty-three illustrations drawn by Richard McConochie for the book "Learning to Fly".  When Richard and I started planning out what the illustrations were going to look like, we met together to brainstorm possible drawings for every poem in the book.  However, as the book came together, we narrowed our selection down to fifty-three based on what would look good and which poems went well with a visual image.  The results I hope are pleasing both to the readers and to God."

"Miracles"

I like the poetic symbolism of a lighthouse casting out light to lead sailors home, much like the miracles God gives us to bring us home to Him.

"Between Friends"

Richard drew this off of a photograph of my cat Emily who died when I was 19.  We had been close since I was four and the poem was written right before she passed away.

"The Song That's In My Heart"

This throne is based off of the royal throne in England.  The poem it goes with is about boldly approaching God's throne as His child.

"A Feast of the Spirit"

Sometimes when I write, I feel like God is speaking through me and I am a tool in His hand. I liked how Richard brought this idea to life with a magical stylus.

"Urquhart Castle"

This imaginary castle was drawn for a poem about a real castle in Scotland.  The poem was published in OSU's literary magazine when I was in college.

"The River Way"

There is so much God wants to teach us through His creation.  Rivers slip past whatever may be in their way, accepting, yet changing them at the same time.  It is a quality I believe God would also like to see in the lives of those He loves.

"Alone"

Richard sketched a picture of me once as we were sitting in a pub.  When I started thinking about having illustrations as a part of the book, I looked at that drawing and decided to ask Richard if he would do it.  This drawing is based off of that first sketch.

"Wanderlust"

The first time Richard brought some sketches for me to look at, this was included.  Although he had only meant to give me an idea of what he could do, I liked the drawing so much that I included the piece in the book and it became one of the first finalized illustrations.
