Books by Sarah Katreen Hoggatt

Anthology

Spirit Rising: Young Quaker Voices is a collaborative effort between myself and nine other young adult Quakers from around the world.  Released in May of 2010, our editorial board brought together in this one book over 200 contributors from seventeen countries, each sharing the experiences of life and spirituality, particularly in the Quaker/Friends church.

Working on this book has been an immense joy for me throughout the whole process of working with the board, seeking submissions, writing for the book myself, and editing the final manuscript.  In its pages are published by me, a photograph "Bench", a poem titled "A Journey Worth Taking" , and a non-fiction piece titled, "Hope in the Night".

Devotional Books

Encountering the Holy, was first published in November of 2006 as an advent devotional and reprinted in November of 2010.  Originally written for one church as a part of my Christian ministries internship, it was actually published by three: Silverton Friends, Reedwood Friends, and Salem First Free Methodist.

While it was a challenge for me to write in a devotional style, I found it invigorating and delightful, something I am looking forward to doing again in the future. The book is meant to be read a day at a time through the Advent season, (most of December up until Christmas) but it can be read any time of the year.  Some people had difficulty with waiting and couldn't put it down for that long.  Click here to read more about the book and for devotional samples.

Poetry Books

Learning to Fly is a compilation of eleven years of my best writing and was published in December of 2002.  The book contains one-hundred and six poems and fifty-three illustrations.  I wanted the poetry to tell a story of how I "learned to fly" on the pilgrimage of life in the hope that others may find the road easier because they have been touched by what God did on another person's journey.

The book came about because my friends and family kept telling me I should publish.  Since they were willing to buy the books beforehand, I was able to use  the money they gave me to get them copied and bound.  My friend, Rebekah, helped me design the book layout and another friend, Richard, drew the illustrations.  Within three months the books sold out and I had to do a second printing This time, I added an ISBN number, rather, like a social security number except for books, and a barcode so they could be sold in bookstores.  Four years later the books are still selling well and receiving  warm reviews.

In His Eyes  It never takes long after you publish a book for people to start asking,  "When is the next one coming out?"  In His Eyes was published in November of 2005.  Within three weeks, the first printing was sold out and I had the delightful job of printing more up before the end of the year!

One thing I have learned since writing the first book, is the importance of pointing to God as the source of all things.  Thus, I wanted the second book to do just that, to point to the God who loves and cares for us all.  At the same time, I wanted to also tell people about His power and mighty hand.  I know for me personally, when I need to remember how great He really is, I will lie outside at night underneath the stars and think about who He is.  I pray this book speaks to your heart as it has mine.

"Broken Blessings" by Christine Elder

Broken Blessings: Few things in life could be more terrifying than finding your child hanging lifeless by a rope on the back of a deserted house, yet this is precisely what author Christine Elder encountered one dark fall night. Broken Blessings is the true story of the hope and strength that guided the author and her family through this trauma, and through the aftermath of her teenage son’s massive brain injury and his continuing struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. It is a tale of both tragedy and miracles, and serves as a courageous example of how we can respond to life’s challenges with trust and hope no matter the depth of our pain or loss. Christine’s deep faith and innate spirituality weave through every page of the narrative, offering a beacon to guide others through their own struggles and to help them discover that there is a compass that guides them,                                    and they are never alone.
